Annual Report

Thank you for supporting your Brighton Area Fire Authority by approving the millage renewal!

 2020 Election Background:

The Brighton Area Fire Authority was on the November 3, 2020 ballot for a renewal of our operating millage beginning in December 2021 through December 2025. This five year millage request covers the Authority operating costs of 1.5 mills on all taxable property in the Authority’s district (Genoa Township, Brighton Township, and the City of Brighton).

During its regularly scheduled board meeting, the Brighton Area Fire Authority Board advised the Fire Chief to file all appropriate paperwork with language approved by the County Clerk which states:

“Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes, which may be levied against all property in Brighton City, Brighton Township and Genoa Township, Livingston County, Michigan be levied to 1.5 mils (an ad valorem tax of $1.50 per thousand dollars of taxable value) for a period of Five (5) years, commencing December 1, 2021-2025, inclusive, to continue the current 1.5 mil levy which expires in December 2020, for the purpose of providing funds to be used by the Brighton Area Fire Authority for the continuation of operations, fire protection, rescue and other safety services and equipment as authorized by Section 12 of Act 57 of the Public Acts of 1988, as amended, that being MCL 124.612, which this millage, If approved and levied, will raise in the first year of levy an estimated $4,337,164.?

The fire authority has utilized this operating millage for the last 10 years at 1.5 mils. Last year the residents approved a millage of 0.89 for 12 years that is used for non-operating costs of building fire stations, replacement of fire apparatus and other capital purchases. During the process for the capital millage, it was expressed that the operating millage for this cycle would be renewal only.

With the renewal of the operating millage, the Authority will be able to continue our operations at the current level. This includes on-duty personal at 2 fire stations, 24 hours a day, continued operations of paid-on-call firefighters from all five fire stations as well as continue our non-emergency activities including community risk reduction, training, and administration.
