ISO Information

ISO refers to the Insurance Services Office, a private company that provides data, underwriting, and risk management services to property insurance companies. The Insurance Services Office (ISO) uses its Public Protection Classification (PPC) system to evaluate communities’ fire protection capabilities, and insurance companies use this information to set property insurance rates. A more detailed description may be found below.

Insurance Services Office (ISO):

This is the specific entity that provides data and services to the insurance industry, as described above.

Public Protection Classification (PPC):

The ISO uses the PPC to assess a community’s ability to suppress fires. This classification is based on the quality of fire protection services, such as fire departments, water supply, and access to hydrants.

Insurance Rates:

Insurance companies use the PPC ratings to help determine the premiums they charge for fire insurance, as a community with better fire protection is considered less risky.

PPC Classifications

Within the Fire Authority’s coverage area, the City of Brighton, Brighton Township, and Genoa Township, there are multiple PPC Classifications. These classifications are primarily affected by available, reliable water supply and distance from a fire station. There descriptions are below.

3/10-FPSA – Fire Protection Supply Available

These areas are located where a municipal or alternate reliable water supply is available.

This rating is typically assigned to properties within five road miles of a fire station and 1,000 feet of a credible water supply. A “10” rating is typically assigned to properties beyond five road miles from a fire station or those not within 1,000 feet of a credible water supply.

4/10 – FDS – Fire Department Supply.

These areas are located where the responding fire apparatus provides the water supply

This number reflects the quality of fire suppression services within a 5-mile radius of a fire station and 1,000 feet of a credible water supply. A “10” rating is typically assigned to properties beyond five road miles from a fire station or those not within 1,000 feet of a credible water supply.
