Station 31 Renovation

Station 31, located at 615 W. Grand River in the City of Brighton, will be undergoing a significant renovation beginning at the end of November 2025.  With the scope of the construction that will be completed, the station must be vacated for the duration of the project.  Construction is expected to be completed in November 2026, with occupancy scheduled for mid-December.

Administration (Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, Human Resources, Permits, and Questions)

Starting on October 16, 2025, the Fire Authority Administration will temporarily relocate to Station 32, located at 1580 S. Old 23, Brighton, MI 48114. Members of the public can visit Station 32 for deliveries, in-person communications (including plan reviews and permits), and general inquiries. Alternatively, call the main number at (810) 229-6640.

Funding

The renovation project is an integral part of a long-term strategic plan initiated in 2017. In 2019, voters across the City of Brighton, Brighton Township, and Genoa Township approved a capital millage. This millage, assessed at 0.89 mills per annum for 12 years (until 2031), funds capital expenditures, including fire stations, apparatus, and protective equipment.

The renovation’s estimated cost is $7.6 million, primarily funded through the millage collection. An additional $1.2 million congressional grant was secured to help offset these costs. To minimize the impact on the fund balance and ensure resources remain available for other capital expenses, construction costs will be distributed across two fiscal years.

Emergency Response

Station 31 holds a unique position, serving as the primary response station to portions of all three municipalities due to its central location. This strategic placement ensures overlapping coverage, enhancing protection for these areas. Full-time, on-duty personnel will be dispatched from Station 33, located at 9955 Weber Dr. in Brighton Township, just beyond the city limits. Paid-on-call staff previously assigned to Station 31 will be reassigned to the station nearest their homes. The Deputy Chief and Battalion Chiefs will continuously monitor response times and make coverage adjustments as needed.
